One of the most highly anticipated movies of 2017 just got its first poster. Above, you can see the artistic design that the marketing team behind Suburbicon has decided to go with in order to promote the new movie. Dressing the leads to look as if they are from the 1950s with a background and a title that just might be evocative of that, too, it is pretty clear what the film is aiming for. On the other hand, the dark subject matter seems to be indicated by the body in the road, the imposing clouds rolling in, and the blood on the main character.
Suburbicon was announced some time ago and received little buzz until recently, now that the marketing for the film is in full gear. The dark comedy is written by Joel and Ethan Coen (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men) and it is directed by the star of many of their films, George Clooney. It also stars three powerhouse actors in Matt Damon (The Martian, Good Will Hunting), Julianne Moore (Still Alice, Boogie Nights), and Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis, Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Suburbicon is set to premiere on October 27, 2017.
The movie debuted at a recent film festival for some critics and it received mixed reviews. Some said they loved the darkly funny tone that resulted in a combination from Clooney and the Coens. Other said the film felt forced and aimless. Despite this, they also levied some praise against it so it seems like the movie will be labeled as “good” at worst. After all, could a combination between the talents of Clooney (who worked with Damon in The Monuments Men and Ocean’s Eleven and the Coens on films like Burn After Reading and Hail, Caesar!), Damon, Moore, and the Coens ever be bad?
