At the end of last year, the song “Once Dance” by Drake made the news by becoming the first song in the history of the music service, Spotify, to achieve one billion streams.
Drake topped this massive accomplishment with a mixtape known as More Life in March, which broke the record for most streams by a new release in an individual day, toppling Ed Sheeran’s album, Divide, by over thirty-three million streams. It seemed like it was Drake’s world and Sheeran as just living in it.
However, today, there is a bit of interesting news as Sheeran and his listeners have crawled their way back thanks to the hit single, “Shape of You,” which has now become the most-streamed song ever on Spotify thanks to 1.3 billion individual streams as of September 22. Drake had not even held the record for one full year when Sheeran bested him.
“Shape of You” was released all the way back in January, but it slowly gained momentum throughout the year and became a behemoth that has stayed on the radio airwaves all throughout 2017. In addition to the Spotify record, “Shape of You” also came in as the number one song on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, where it remained for thirty-sex weeks.
Sheeran has been having a pretty good 2017 as he even appeared in an episode of Game of Thrones. Has Drake visited Westeros yet? We don’t think so.
