Many people who subscribe to Netflix and Hulu were not old enough to remember when, in 1992, The Golden Girls came to an end on NBC.
Regardless, this has not stopped anyone from seeing what adventures Dorothy (Bea Arthur), Sophia (Estelle Getty), Rose (Betty White), and Blanche (Rue MccLanahan) got up to because the show recently joined the library of content Hulu has available for instant streaming. Many people watch the adventures of the women from Florida in any place they can.
While Game of Thrones broke records for television ratings this past summer, many young people have flocked to The Golden Girls when the high fantasy show is not airing, with some even embarking on multiple viewings of the comedy.
Television viewers and fans used to learn about old shows by catching reruns on cable channels, but now, that discovery process is shifting towards streaming platforms like Hulu and Netflix, both of which are managing to get new generations hooked on old shows.
What makes this more astonishing is the fact that there are almost five hundred original, scripted television shows airing or in production this year and viewers still choose to watch old reruns.
Some other shows that are available on streaming services that are competing with some of the biggest hits of today and, in some cases, prevailing are comedies like the aforementioned one, as well as Friends and Seinfeld and dramas like The West Wing and The Sopranos.
